Chad Reports 63 Fatalities in Cholera

(MENAFN) A cholera outbreak sweeping through eastern Chad has left at least 63 people dead, according to a statement released Monday by the country's Health Ministry.

Since the outbreak began in July, officials have recorded 938 suspected infections, with 52 samples tested and 39 cases confirmed in Ouaddai Province, where the situation remains critical.

On Monday morning, Public Health Minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim held an emergency meeting with health authorities in Abeche, the provincial capital, to coordinate containment measures. During the session, Abderahim announced that the government was intensifying efforts to fight the spread, emphasizing improvements in water access, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure.

Abderahim announced that the government is intensifying efforts to improve water access, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, while urging communities to stay vigilant. Health authorities are emphasizing the need for strict compliance with hygiene measures to contain the outbreak.

The crisis has been worsened by previous outbreaks in vulnerable areas. In July, four people died in the Dougui refugee camp, also in Ouaddai. The camp shelters around 20,000 Sudanese refugees, raising concerns about disease spread in densely populated settlements.

In June, the World Health Organization (WHO) had warned that escalating cholera cases in neighboring Sudan—which is grappling with conflict and displacement—could spill over into countries like Chad, which hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees living in overcrowded conditions.

Health authorities remain on high alert as they battle to prevent the outbreak from turning into a wider humanitarian crisis.
