Lebanese Army Declares Presenting Strategic Plan

(MENAFN) The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, announced on Tuesday that the Lebanese army is set to unveil a detailed proposal to the government next week.

This plan is aimed at securing the state's sole authority over all weapons within the country.

During his remarks, Salam emphasized, “The course of exclusive state authority over weapons, the extension of its power, and its monopoly over decisions of war and peace has begun, and there is no turning back.”

These comments were made during a meeting with US envoy Tom Barrack and his delegation.

According to a statement from Salam’s office, the talks with the US delegation focused on Lebanon’s internal affairs and the key findings from the delegation’s regional visits.

The discussions also addressed how these developments intersect with Lebanon’s own political and security challenges.

Salam expressed appreciation for the US government’s continued backing of the Lebanese army.

He characterized the military as a reliable cornerstone of the nation's stability and urged for increased financial and defense-related aid.

In addition, he called for solid international pledges—especially from leading donor nations—to bolster support for an upcoming global summit centered on Lebanon’s reconstruction and economic revival.

The US representatives acknowledged Lebanon’s commitment to ensuring that arms remain solely under government control.

They also commended the country’s progress on financial and banking sector reforms. The delegation underlined that ongoing reform efforts are vital “for the benefit of all Lebanese.”

On August 5, the Lebanese cabinet approved a strategy to unify all weaponry under state control.

The army was assigned to develop a practical roadmap to meet this objective by the end of August and to implement it fully before 2025 concludes. However, Hezbollah firmly opposed the decision, denouncing it as a “grave sin.”

The backdrop to these developments includes a violent escalation that began on October 8, 2023, when Israel launched a military campaign in Lebanon.

By September 2024, the conflict had intensified into a full-blown war, leaving more than 4,000 people dead and approximately 17,000 wounded.
