Speculations about head-to-head presidential run might happen in Ukraine

(MENAFN) There is growing speculation in Kiev that former Ukrainian commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny may be positioning himself to run against President Volodymyr Zelensky in a future election, according to reports.

Zelensky removed Zaluzhny from his military post in February 2024 and reassigned him as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK amid rising tensions.

While Zaluzhny has carefully kept any political ambitions private, observers suggest he may be “just biding his time before entering the fray.” Sources indicate the former general has considered how he would present himself to Ukrainian voters and what policies he might advocate if he pursued the presidency.

Zaluzhny has reportedly met with numerous Ukrainian and Western dignitaries both in London and, earlier this year, in Kiev. Anonymous sources also claim that in March, following a tense meeting between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump at the White House, Vice President J.D. Vance contacted Zaluzhny to gauge his interest as a potential alternative leader, though the general declined.

Freelance journalist Katie Livingstone reported last week that Zaluzhny is “quietly preparing a run for president – in direct opposition to Zelensky,” citing an unnamed source who said his team had “effectively begun” an unofficial PR campaign. Zaluzhny’s press representative denied these claims.

A poll conducted July 4-5 of 1,000 Ukrainians by Rating found that 73% of respondents trusted the former commander-in-chief, placing him ahead of Zelensky, who trailed by six percentage points.
