Witkoff states Washington hoping for Ukrainian war to end by end of year

(MENAFN) US special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff has indicated that Washington aims to see the Ukraine conflict concluded by the end of 2025, citing Moscow’s “peace proposal on the table” and ongoing discussions with Russian and Ukrainian officials, according to reports.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump, Witkoff said he will be “having meetings all this week” on Ukraine and other global conflicts, “and we hope to settle them before the end of this year.”

In a subsequent interview with a news agency, Witkoff acknowledged that while Trump had expressed frustration with both Moscow and Kiev, the Russian side has at least “put a peace proposal on the table.” He noted that some territorial concessions “may not be something that the Ukrainians can take,” but argued that the administration had brought the parties closer to an agreement than ever before.

“There’s a peace proposal on the table,” Witkoff reiterated. “We’re at this place where we think the end is in sight... we have technical teams working on it and we’re hopeful that by the end of this year, and maybe quite a bit sooner, we actually can find the ingredients to get to that peace deal.”

According to Witkoff, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a strong desire to resolve the conflict and discussed Moscow’s position extensively with Trump during their Alaska summit earlier this month. While details of any potential agreement remain undisclosed, Moscow has maintained that a lasting settlement requires Kiev to forego NATO membership, undergo demilitarization and denazification, and recognize the current status of Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye as part of Russia—territories that held referendums in 2014 and 2022.
