Kremlin Labels New York Mayoral Election as U.S. “Internal Affair”
During a press conference in Moscow, Peskov was asked whether the election outcome could create domestic divisions in the United States that might affect Washington’s support in resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
He responded that the New York mayoral race and the situation in Ukraine are unrelated.
"We don't think that these things are interconnected in any way. This is the internal affair of the United States of America," he emphasized.
Mamdani, 34, emerged as New York City's first Muslim mayor in Tuesday's elections, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
Peskov also noted that the Kremlin has observed a strong curiosity from Western reporters regarding President Vladimir Putin's suggestion to visit Ukrainian regions where Kyiv's forces are reportedly encircled in "cauldrons."
"There is a lot of interest, and we know that a large number of Western journalists would like to go there. I am not aware of any Ukrainian journalists who would declare their desire to go," he added.
The spokesman claimed that Kyiv is attempting to conceal the difficulties faced by its troops by obstructing the initiative.
Putin made the proposal on Oct. 29, stating that the Defense Ministry was prepared to allow foreign media into encircled zones so that journalists could "see with their own eyes what was happening there."
The next day, the ministry announced plans to suspend combat for five to six hours to establish safe passageways.
