Death Toll from India’s Train Collision Climbs to Eight

(MENAFN) The death toll from Tuesday’s devastating train accident in India’s central state of Chhattisgarh has climbed to eight, with at least 17 others seriously injured, officials confirmed.

The collision occurred in the Bilaspur district when a passenger train crashed into a stationary goods train, causing multiple carriages to derail and trapping passengers inside twisted metal. Emergency teams rushed to the site soon after the crash, battling through debris to reach those still trapped.

By late Tuesday, two passengers were reportedly still stuck inside the wreckage as rescue workers, using heavy equipment and cutting tools, worked urgently to free them. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals in Bilaspur and neighboring towns, where medical teams are on high alert.

“This is a big accident. We are carrying out rescue operations,” Bilaspur District Collector Sanjay Agrawal was quoted as saying by local media.
