Ukraine Accused of Striking Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant's Radiation Lab

(MENAFN) The management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant leveled serious accusations against Ukraine on Sunday, claiming its armed forces struck the facility's external radiation monitoring laboratory in a drone attack that poses a direct threat to nuclear safety.

The plant's press service issued a statement on Max, the Russian social media platform, squarely blaming Kyiv for the strike.

"The armed forces of Ukraine are creating a threat to the radiation safety of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Today, during the day, they carried out a drone attack on the external radiation monitoring laboratory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP," the station's press service said.

Plant staff reported no casualties and found no critical damage to equipment, with operations continuing under normal parameters, according to the statement.

"The Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to function in a safe mode. The situation is under control," the statement read.

Plant management has since notified inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of the incident, the statement confirmed.

Officials underscored the strategic importance of the targeted facility, warning of cascading consequences if the system is compromised.

"This laboratory provides continuous monitoring of the radiation situation around the plant site, control of meteorological parameters, and collection of data necessary for forecasting possible response scenarios in case of emergencies with radiological consequences," the statement said.

The plant further cautioned that Ukraine's actions jeopardize not only nuclear safety broadly, but specifically the radiation monitoring infrastructure — potentially undermining the speed and accuracy of emergency response assessments in any future radiological incident.
