Trump Says US Begins Escorting Neutral Ships Through Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says the United States begins escorting neutral foreign vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning Middle East time, describing the move as a humanitarian operation, according to reports.
Trump says several countries request assistance after their ships become stuck in the strategic waterway amid ongoing tensions.
He adds that US officials are instructed to coordinate safe passage for affected vessels, which will remain outside the area until conditions improve for navigation.
Trump names the initiative “Project Freedom,” claiming that some ships face shortages of food and essential supplies while stranded with large crews.
"The ship movement is merely meant to free up people, companies, and countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong — They are victims of circumstance," he said.
He also states that the operation serves the interests of Iran, the wider Middle East, and the United States, warning that any interference with the mission would be met with a forceful response.
Trump further says that US representatives are holding what he describes as “very positive” talks with Iran, suggesting the discussions could lead to a favorable outcome for all sides, as stated by reports.
