Ukraine, Norway Advance Drone Collaboration, Air Defense Talks
(MENAFN) Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Norway’s prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre held discussions on Sunday focusing on strategic cooperation, including a potential drone agreement and efforts to reinforce air defense capabilities.
According to reports, Zelenskyy said the meeting took place in Yerevan ahead of the upcoming European Political Community summit scheduled for May 4. He expressed appreciation for Norway’s continued support, particularly its financial contributions to defense-related assistance programs.
As stated by general accounts, Zelenskyy highlighted that Norway has contributed nearly $1 billion through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, stressing the importance of timely funding due to ongoing missile attacks.
“Russia is not stopping its ballistic missile strikes, so the timely funding of PURL is critically important,” he added.
He also noted that discussions included Ukraine’s energy needs, especially natural gas supplies ahead of the winter season, and emphasized the importance of preparing adequately.
Ukraine and Norway had previously signed a defense cooperation agreement in April, and both sides have reportedly been exploring a drone initiative aimed at countering aerial threats.
In separate remarks, Zelenskyy also referenced ongoing efforts with Finland to deepen defense cooperation through a similar “Drone Deal” framework. He met Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and discussed expanding military collaboration.
According to reports, he thanked Finland for approving an additional $300 million in defense assistance, noting that air defense remains a key priority area for strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
