Honduran Vote Count Resumes Amid Tight Presidential Race

(MENAFN) Honduran election officials restarted the counting of votes from the Nov. 30 presidential election on Monday, ending a three-day pause, with conservative contender Nasry Asfura still holding a slim advantage.

By 2:09 p.m. local time (2009 GMT), over 91% of the ballots had been processed, with Asfura of the National Party securing 40.11%, slightly ahead of centrist Liberal Party hopeful Salvador Nasralla, who had 39.73%, according to the Honduran National Election Council (CNE).

Rixi Moncada, representing President Xiomara Castro’s Libre Party, remained in third place with 19.17%.

Since Friday, citizens had been left uncertain amid what has been described as the country’s most contentious election in recent memory.

On Sunday, the Libre Party demanded the annulment of the election outcome, accusing US President Donald Trump of interfering by backing Asfura, offering promises of support for Honduras if he prevails, and criticizing Moncada, whom he has called a communist and corrupt.

CNE President Ana Paola Hall explained that the delay in releasing results since Friday stemmed from a third instance of “technical problems” that disrupted the system.

The electoral authority has also contended with several obstacles, including alleged attempts to breach and manipulate the software used for reporting the vote tally.
