Mexico, Guatemala launch joint border operations against drug cartels

(MENAFN) Mexico and Guatemala announced a coordinated security initiative along their shared border to combat drug trafficking in the region, as stated by reports from the Mexican military.

Mexico’s Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, shared the details during a press briefing in Mexico City, following a clash the previous day between Guatemalan forces and armed individuals suspected to belong to a Mexican cartel on Guatemalan soil.

“A plan will be implemented to carry out coordinated operations along the border with Mexican Army forces on our territory, and similar operations will also be conducted with personnel from Guatemala. These operations begin today and are tentatively scheduled to end on the 11th. However, if necessary, they will be extended for as long as required,” Trejo said.

He added that the government has directed the Southeast Military Air Region, based in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, to conduct reconnaissance flights along the border on the Mexican side.

The prior night, Guatemala’s Ministry of Defense reported a shooting in a small Huehuetenango community near the Mexican border. Officials said “unidentified illegal armed groups” crossed into Guatemala and engaged with a routine army patrol, resulting in an attack on the soldiers.

One Guatemalan soldier was injured, though not seriously. Following the incident, a military deployment secured the area, leading to one arrest and the seizure of heavy weaponry, explosives, additional equipment, and drones.

On Tuesday, Trejo confirmed that Mexican troops were stationed along the border and that military personnel were sharing information with Guatemalan counterparts.

According to reports, two criminal organizations currently dominate the border region: the Sinaloa Cartel and the Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel, both of which frequently operate across the Mexico-Guatemala frontier.
