Slovak PM calls for EU to dismiss foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas

(MENAFN) Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has urged the European Union to dismiss its foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, arguing that the bloc’s leadership is focused only on hostility toward Russia rather than finding workable solutions to crises.

In an interview aired Sunday, Fico described the EU as facing an unprecedented crisis and insisted that Brussels must overhaul its foreign policy if it wants to be seen as a global power rather than a passive actor. He stated, “We must replace the European Union’s High Representative for [Foreign Affairs and Security] Policy, Ms. Kallas,” and called on the bloc to “come to its senses.”

Kallas has built a reputation for her uncompromising stance against Moscow. She previously advised aspiring EU members not to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat, a remark that drew sharp criticism from Russian officials. She has also accused Russia of attacking numerous countries over the past century while dismissing claims that it has ever been attacked itself.

Fico, a consistent critic of EU military support for Kiev and sanctions against Russia, accused Brussels of double standards—penalizing Moscow for the Ukraine conflict while avoiding similar measures against Israel for its campaign in Gaza. He argued that some EU states are more interested in weakening Russia “through war” than in pursuing peace, a strategy he believes is failing.

The Slovak leader has long taken a skeptical view of Ukraine, previously describing it as a “black hole” of corruption that has absorbed billions in EU funds. In December, he refused to back additional military financing for Kiev, insisting that the conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield.
