Ukraine Eyes Telegram Ban, Citing National Security Threats

(MENAFN) Ukraine's Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Iryna Vereshchuk, has called for restrictions on Telegram and similar "anonymous platforms," citing national security threats and a deadly weekend explosion in the country's west.

Vereshchuk pointed to Sunday's blast in Lviv — which she characterized as a "terrorist attack" — as fresh evidence that adversaries are exploiting encrypted messaging services to orchestrate violence on Ukrainian soil.

"Once again, we see that the enemy systematically uses Telegram to recruit terrorists, coordinate their activities, and carry out terrorist attacks," she wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

"This is another reminder for us to think about the functioning of Telegram and other anonymous platforms in our information space during war," she added.

The call comes as Telegram finds itself under simultaneous pressure on both sides of the conflict. Russian authorities have spent recent months tightening their grip on the platform over data localization requirements and counter-terrorism compliance. Moscow began throttling the app's speeds in December before briefly cutting access altogether in early February — a move swiftly reversed after widespread backlash from Russian military users who rely on the service.

The pressure escalated further on Saturday, when Russia's Federal Security Service accused Telegram of actively supplying intelligence to Ukraine's military and security services — an allegation that deepens the geopolitical friction surrounding the platform as both nations seek to leverage or limit its reach.
