Kenya Holds Sufficient Fuel Stocks Amid Middle East Tensions
Opiyo Wandayi, Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, confirmed in an official statement that current fuel inventories are adequate to satisfy both domestic consumption and regional supply commitments.
"We have scheduled imports for delivery up to the end of April 2026, and therefore, as it stands, we are assured of security of supply," Wandayi said.
The government is actively tracking the deteriorating regional situation and coordinating with government-to-government suppliers on contingency planning, he added.
The statement was issued against a backdrop of mounting concern that intensifying Middle East hostilities could choke off global petroleum supply routes — particularly tanker shipments transiting the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of Kenya's fuel imports pass.
Wandayi moved to further reassure consumers and industry stakeholders. "We wish to assure the public and all stakeholders that the ministry remains alert and shall continue taking necessary actions to ensure there is an uninterrupted supply," he said.
Nairobi sources the bulk of its petroleum products from the Middle East, making developments in the region a matter of acute economic concern for both policymakers and ordinary consumers across the country.
