U.S. Submarine Attacks Iranian Warship, Killing 80 at Sea

(MENAFN) A U.S. submarine destroyed an Iranian naval vessel in international waters Wednesday, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth confirmed — marking the first enemy ship sunk by torpedo since World War II.

"An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters," Hegseth said at a Pentagon briefing. "Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo."

At least 80 sailors perished when the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was struck and sent to the bottom of the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka's southern coastline, according to Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra.

The IRIS Dena had previously participated in a naval exercise conducted in the Bay of Bengal between Feb. 18 and 25, the drill's official website showed.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) disclosed Wednesday that American forces have struck or destroyed more than 20 Iranian vessels since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on Saturday.

"Last night, CENTCOM added a Soleimani-class warship to the list," the command posted on X.

The strike represents a dramatic escalation in the ongoing military campaign, with Wednesday's confirmed kill extending a rapidly growing toll on Iran's naval assets across the region.
