Azerbaijan Reports Iranian Strikes on Nakhchivan Exclave

(MENAFN) Azerbaijan accused Iran on Thursday of launching drone strikes against its Nakhchivan exclave, hitting a civilian airport and narrowly missing a school in what Baku is calling a direct violation of international law.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said the strikes occurred around midday, with one drone tearing into the terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport and a second landing near a school building in the village of Shakarabad — raising immediate alarm over civilian safety.

"We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in damage to the airport building and injuries to two civilians," the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

The ministry described the incident as an act that "constitutes a violation of the norms and principles of international law and serves to increase tensions in the region."

Baku moved swiftly on the diplomatic front, summoning Iranian Ambassador to Baku Mojtaba Demirchilou to the Foreign Ministry, where a "strong protest" would be conveyed and a formal diplomatic note handed to the Iranian side. Azerbaijan demanded Tehran provide a clear explanation "within the shortest possible timeframe," carry out a thorough investigation, and guarantee no repeat of such incidents.

The Foreign Ministry stopped short of ruling out retaliation, warning that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take "appropriate response measures."

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry issued a parallel, sharply worded statement, placing full blame squarely on Tehran.

"The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan is preparing the necessary response measures to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country, ensure the safety of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and these acts of aggression will not go unanswered," it said.

Iran has not yet issued any comment on the incident.
