Russian, Iranian FMs Hold Phone Talks on Middle East Tensions
"The development of the situation in the region resulting from the unprovoked armed aggression of the US and Israel against Iran was discussed," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The talks highlighted that such military actions violate fundamental norms of international law and carry serious consequences for the region as a whole.
"Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed the principled position in favor of de-escalating the situation, renouncing the use of force, and transitioning to a political-diplomatic settlement of the conflict, as well as Russia's readiness to contribute to this in every possible way," the statement added.
Both sides also stressed the priority of ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure across all countries in the region.
The discussion comes after US and Israeli forces launched a major strike on Iran on Saturday, reportedly killing several top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has since retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and US-linked sites in Gulf countries.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to "destroy Iran's missiles, raze its missile industry to the ground, and annihilate the navy," insisting that Tehran must not obtain nuclear weapons. The strikes occurred despite ongoing nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, mediated by Oman.
