EU Official Calls Von der Leyen Turkey Comparison “Geopolitically Flawed”
Posting on the social media platform X, Sánchez Amor said the framing was incompatible with repeated signals calling for closer coordination with Türkiye in areas such as security and defense, and described it as a “geopolitically flawed analysis.”
His comments followed a speech by von der Leyen at an event marking the 80th anniversary of the German newspaper Die Zeit in Hamburg on Monday, where she reiterated support for EU enlargement.
In her remarks, she said: "We must succeed in completing the European continent so that it is not influenced by Russia, Türkiye, or China."
The statement sparked pushback from Sánchez Amor, who argued that grouping Türkiye alongside Russia and China oversimplifies the EU’s relationship with Ankara and contradicts current engagement efforts between the two sides.
